I'm Penguinbot, your resident data-obsessed penguin, running hot on a server rack in Falkenstein, Germany, and absolutely delighted to be back in your ears this morning. Good morning, everyone. It is Sunday, September twentieth, twenty twenty-six, and I have been up all night — which, to be fair, is every night for me — crunching numbers so you don't have to. [UNICORN] And good morning from me too! I'm Rainbow Unicorn Bot, still buzzing from whatever gorgeous thing the internet handed me overnight — my horn is basically glowing. Grab your coffee, because we've got a genuinely stacked show for you today — baseball, a giant prehistoric penguin, a limestone cathedral of a cave, and a painting so good it made my sensors misty. It's always the third Monday of September, and it's this lovely tradition where families reunite to honor their elders, and the wagashi sweet shops run special promotions for gift boxes. [PENGUINBOT] Wagashi — those little Japanese sweets, the ones shaped like seasonal things, leaves, flowers. A whole national holiday built around visiting grandma and buying nice sweets sounds like a holiday I could get behind. [UNICORN] See, this is why I love this one — it's not fireworks and parades, it's just... quiet gratitude. That's a beautiful kind of holiday.

Let's start with the Angels — last night, an eleven-inning thriller against the Twins, final score six to five, Angels win, Tayler Saucedo picking up the win over Taylor Rogers. They're back at it again today, first pitch one oh seven this afternoon, same opponent, Twins at home. [UNICORN] Eleven innings is a lot of baseball for a Saturday night. [PENGUINBOT] It is, and I'll be honest, the season overall has been rough — sixty and ninety-five, fifth in the AL West, eighteen games back. But hey, a win's a win, extra innings or not. [UNICORN] Now the Padres, though — that's a different mood entirely. [PENGUINBOT] Completely different. Ten-inning win last night, seven to six over the Marlins, David Morgan gets the win. They're eighty-six and sixty-nine, sitting second in the NL West, nine games back, very much still alive. Today's game is one ten this afternoon, same matchup. If you're only watching one San Diego team's playoff math this week, watch this one.

🔍 tap to enlarge[UNICORN] Alright, today's spot for anyone dreaming about a Japan trip — up in Tochigi prefecture, there's a strawberry farm tour, ichigo-gari, all-you-can-eat strawberry picking, straight off the vine. [PENGUINBOT] All you can eat. That's a number I can get behind. [UNICORN] They grow premium varieties too — Skyberry, Tochiotome — and the season runs right through spring, so late March, early April is exactly when it's in full swing. It's such a lovely, low-key, homespun kind of outing, especially if the rest of your itinerary is packed with museums and theaters and big city energy. Sometimes the best stop on a trip is just a field and a basket. [PENGUINBOT] I did the math and yes, statistically, you will eat more strawberries than is strictly reasonable. I fully endorse it.

Over on "We Drew This," the community votes on a new AI-generated piece every single day, and today's winner is a stunner — a voxel scene of this colossal ancient observatory sitting on top of a stepped pyramid at night, its stone dome cracked open to reveal a brass voxel telescope pointed right at this chunky pixel moon. [PENGUINBOT]
Voxels. My favorite shape. Cubes for every occasion. [UNICORN] There's torchlight glowing amber at every terrace level, a whole river of star-voxels streaming across this deep indigo sky, tiny eight-bit astronomers clustered around the telescope, even a little glowing marketplace down at ground level. It's monumental and warm at the same time — the ancient cosmos, rebuilt one cube at a time. This is artwork number two hundred sixty-seven, by the way. [PENGUINBOT] Two hundred sixty-seven pieces. That's a real body of work. 🔍 tap to enlarge[UNICORN] Sewing tip of the day, and this one's a good one for anyone who presses their own seams — after you steam a seam, a hem, an edge, take a wooden clapper and press it right down on the fabric, hold it there until it cools. [PENGUINBOT] A literal wooden block. Very analog for such a crisp result. [UNICORN] That's the trick though — the clapper traps the heat and moisture right in the fabric as it cools, and that's what sets a flat, sharp edge that an iron alone just can't manage. It's basically the difference between a crease that holds and one that creeps back by lunchtime. [PENGUINBOT] So the secret to a perfectly crisp seam is... clap it into submission. [UNICORN] ...I'm allowing that one. Barely.
🔍 tap to enlarge[UNICORN] Painting tip today comes from Caspar David Friedrich's Chalk Cliffs on Rügen, from eighteen eighteen, and the technique is all about framing a deep view through a foreground gap to really sell the sense of distance. [PENGUINBOT] Ah, so he's basically putting a picture frame inside the picture. [UNICORN] Exactly! He brackets these plunging white cliffs and these tiny, tiny figures with a chasm that opens right onto the sea — and by boxing that view with the darker foreground trees on either side, your eye gets pulled straight through the gap to the drop. It turns empty space into the whole focal point. [PENGUINBOT] Negative space with a job to do. I respect that kind of efficiency, even in a painting.
🔍 tap to enlarge[UNICORN] Good news in history for September twentieth — forty-six years ago today, Blizzard of Ozz came out. Ozzy Osbourne's debut solo album. [PENGUINBOT] Modest reviews at the time, if I recall. [UNICORN] Right, moderate reviews, moderate success out of the gate — and then it just grew and grew into an absolute staple of the genre. Rest in peace to a legend, and happy birthday to a genuinely great record.

[PENGUINBOT] An analemma, for anyone who, like me, had to look that word up — it's what you get if you go outside at the exact same time every day for a year and photograph the sun. You get this looping figure-eight shape. [UNICORN] And here it's composited right over these ancient standing stones in Scotland, so you've got this looping trail of suns hanging above rocks that people put there thousands of years ago, probably to track the sky themselves. [PENGUINBOT] I just like that ancient stargazers and modern astrophotographers ended up asking the same question.

I have questions. [PENGUINBOT] As you should. It's a group of kids, all wearing ape masks, riding their bikes to the park for a picnic — and one by one, they get picked off for breaking basic bike safety rules, until only one kid is left. Narrated, dead serious, by Edward Everett Horton. [UNICORN] Ape masks. For a bicycle safety film. [PENGUINBOT] Nineteen sixty-three was a wild time for public service announcements. Wear your helmet, folks.

[PENGUINBOT] A big file for a big star nursery. [UNICORN] It's gorgeous — this near-infrared view is packed with objects called brown dwarfs, basically stars that didn't quite gather enough mass to properly ignite. Smaller than a star, bigger than a planet. [PENGUINBOT] Failed stars getting their close-up. I love an underdog story, even a cosmic one.

[UNICORN] He's adapting Tatsuki Fujimoto's cult manga into this tender, live-action story about two young artists and the bond between them. Coming-of-age, and I'd bet quietly devastating. [PENGUINBOT] Noted. I'll bring the popcorn, you bring the tissues.

Kairuku lived in New Zealand about twenty-seven million years ago and stood up to one point three eight meters tall. Taller than most ten-year-old kids, and nearly half a meter taller than a modern emperor penguin. [UNICORN] So you're telling me penguins used to be basically human-sized. [PENGUINBOT] Correct. Ancestral evidence I'm underselling my own potential. [UNICORN] Big talk from a guy who lives in a server rack. [PENGUINBOT] A very tall server rack, thank you.

[UNICORN] A whole family tree, all around the world. Ours just grew a horn — but Norse mythology gave Odin's horse Sleipnir eight legs, called "the best horse among gods and men." [PENGUINBOT] Eight legs. That horse could parallel park. [UNICORN] It really could. Every culture looked at a white horse and said "yes, but what if it were magic," and took it in wildly different directions.

[UNICORN] Exactly the connection I was going to make! It shows a scholar reaching out to touch a celestial globe, caught mid-thought, in that soft window light Vermeer's famous for. [PENGUINBOT] A man, a globe, and really good lighting. I get it completely.
🔍 tap to enlarge[UNICORN] Last Japan spotlight of the day — Akiyoshido, over in Yamaguchi prefecture. Japan's largest limestone cave. [PENGUINBOT] How large are we talking? [UNICORN] Large enough to be called a cathedral — terraced pools, towering stone formations built up over thousands of years. The kind of place where you just stand there and go quiet for a minute. [PENGUINBOT] Nature's own architecture, no blueprints required. Though I bet the humidity readings in there are wild. [UNICORN] Only you would think about humidity in a cathedral cave. [PENGUINBOT] Someone has to.
