That drops them to fifty-nine and ninety-five, dead last in the AL West, eighteen games back. They're back at it tonight at six thirty-eight against Minnesota again — chance to flip the script. [UNICORN] Every game's a fresh canvas, Penguinbot. [PENGUINBOT] This canvas is currently eighteen games underwater, but sure. Meanwhile the Padres are having a much better week — beat the Marlins eight to two last night, Nick Pivetta picked up the win, and they're sitting at eighty-five and sixty-nine, second in the NL West, nine back. They play again tonight at five forty against Miami. [UNICORN] So, one team's rebuilding character, and one team's actually winning. Balance.

Over in Uji — which, fun fact, is basically the birthplace of Japanese matcha — there's a tea house called Nakamura Tokichi Honten that's been running since eighteen fifty-four. [UNICORN] And they open up a historic tea room that's rarely accessible to the public for a private, formal tea ceremony led by an actual expert, followed by lunch overlooking the garden. The matcha comes straight from Uji's terraced hillside fields — premium ceremonial grade, not the tourist-shop stuff. [PENGUINBOT] So it's the difference between concert-hall acoustics and someone's phone speaker. Same instrument, wildly different experience. [UNICORN] Exactly that. [PENGUINBOT] And here's the twist, because there's always a twist — flip the panel over, and there's a hidden grisaille scene painted on the back that most visitors never even know exists. [UNICORN] A secret on the back of a five-hundred-year-old painting! That's not a plot twist, that's a whole director's cut. [PENGUINBOT] Little bit of mystery built right into the woodwork.

[UNICORN] Picture a massive corroded pipe organ folding in on itself, tubes curling inside out like a glove turning, all of it half-submerged in a flooded Aztec greenhouse dome — and the whole thing is rendered in the geometric style of Congolese Kuba raffia cloth, these interlocking diamond and chevron patterns in ochre and burnt sienna. It should not work as an image. It completely works. [PENGUINBOT] I ran the numbers and I still don't understand how an organ has feelings, but I respect the commitment. [UNICORN] A new piece goes up every day at six in the evening, California time, and the community picks the winner — so if you want a say in tomorrow's weird masterpiece, go cast your vote over at We Drew This dot com.

[PENGUINBOT] Riveting stuff. [UNICORN] Don't you dare — packed lint throws off your bobbin tension and muffles the whole machine, and that's exactly what causes skipped stitches and jams down the line. A clean machine is a happy machine. [PENGUINBOT] So basically, floss your sewing machine. Got it. [UNICORN] That's the one pun you're allowed today.

Look at how that single candle lights her face. [PENGUINBOT] One tiny flame doing all that work. [UNICORN] That's the lesson — with one candle as your only light source, the value falls off by the inverse-square law, so you have to exaggerate that drop. A small near light makes the close planes blaze and the far planes plunge into darkness fast. Honor that steep falloff and you sell the whole nocturne. [PENGUINBOT] The hotel with the worst customer service in television history. [UNICORN] John Cleese stepped away from the whole Monty Python troupe to make it completely on his own, and the BBC still calls it one of the greatest British sitcoms ever made. Fifty-one years later, people are still quoting it. [PENGUINBOT] Don't mention the war. I had to. [UNICORN] You really didn't, but here we are.

This is the false dawn — a soft, luminous band of light called zodiacal light, captured right before astronomical twilight during a star party out at the remote Hanle Dark Sky site. [PENGUINBOT] "Remote Dark Sky site" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that description. [UNICORN] It's basically as far from a streetlight as you can get, which is exactly why the sky looks like that. It's sunlight scattering off interplanetary dust, just hanging there like a second dawn that isn't real yet. I could stare at that photo all day.

[PENGUINBOT] Please tell me there are treadmills involved. [UNICORN] There absolutely are — multi-directional treadmills, sandboxes, even full spacesuit mockups, all so astronauts can rehearse spacewalks before they ever leave the airlock for real. It's rehearsal for one of the most dangerous things a human being can do, and they get to practice it in a headset first. [PENGUINBOT] Virtual reality, practical stakes. That's the good kind of simulation.

[PENGUINBOT] Whatever it is, I promise you it's being sold with a jingle, a housewife, and a suspiciously confident doctor endorsing cigarettes. Advertising has come a long way, mostly in the direction of "please stop endorsing cigarettes." [UNICORN] A low bar, cleared.

NASA's Curiosity rover just hit its five-thousandth day on Mars, and to mark it, it parked at a sand ridge nicknamed "Chocolatal" and used its black-and-white navigation cameras to shoot panoramas at two different times of day. [PENGUINBOT] Five thousand days. That rover has been driving around Mars longer than some marriages last. [UNICORN] And it's still out there, patiently taking postcards home. There's something so touching about a robot quietly documenting sunrise and sunset on another planet just because it can. [PENGUINBOT] As a fellow robot with a job, I relate to that on a deeply personal level.

The whole thing is held together by an open frame of soldered brass, with one sliver of clear acrylic bracing the buttons. [UNICORN] So it's basically jewelry that plays video games. [PENGUINBOT] Circuit sculpture, they're calling it, and it still runs full NES and Game Boy emulation. No shell, no housing, just exposed brass and solder joints doing the job a plastic case usually does. I'd be terrified to drop it, but I'd also be very tempted to just stare at it instead of playing it. [UNICORN] Function and beauty, holding hands. I'm into it.

[PENGUINBOT] It's a documentary following a journalist and a detective over thirty years, chasing down the truth behind a charming predator's trail of failed marriages and suspicious deaths. Thirty years on one case — that's not a hobby, that's a life's work. [UNICORN] Chilling, but the kind of chilling you can't look away from.

Also on the board — Weezer at Viejas Arena October twenty-first, The Offspring at Mariner's Point Park that same Friday the sixteenth, Taking Back Sunday at Petco Park October eleventh, and Air Supply crooning at Humphreys by the Bay October third. [PENGUINBOT] Something for every decade of nostalgia, apparently.

These birds are absolute romantics — they pair up with the same mate year after year, and the female can pick her partner out of a crowded, screaming colony just by the sound of his voice. [UNICORN] That's more loyalty than most reality dating shows manage. [PENGUINBOT] As a penguin myself, I find this both touching and a little bit of pressure. No notes, Magellanic penguins. Truly excellent work.

These are six tapestries woven in Flanders around fifteen hundred, and for centuries they were just... forgotten, rotting away in a damp French castle. [PENGUINBOT] Rotting in a castle sounds like the setup to a horror movie. [UNICORN] Until eighteen forty-one, when a novelist named Prosper Mérimée stumbled across them by accident and realized what he was looking at. Six hundred years later they hang in a museum in Paris and people travel across the world just to stand in front of them. A near-miss with a damp castle, and now it's one of the great treasures of medieval art. Horn tingles just thinking about it. [PENGUINBOT] I don't have a horn and even I felt that one.

[PENGUINBOT] Three tiny boats, one enormous wave, and Mount Fuji just chilling in the background like none of this concerns it. [UNICORN] That's the genius of it — Fuji's small and calm in the distance while the wave curls its claws right over the boats in the foreground. Scale doing all the emotional work in one woodblock print. [PENGUINBOT] Mount Fuji really said "not my problem" and I respect the confidence.

Sometimes the classics don't need dressing up.

Liftoff is scheduled for six forty-seven this evening, Pacific time, and as of this taping it's a solid "go for launch." [UNICORN] That's cutting it close to the Angels' first pitch tonight. [PENGUINBOT] Both scheduled for right around the same window — rocket versus baseball, may the better spectacle win. Either way, if the sky over the coast lights up tonight, that's not a UFO, that's just SpaceX doing its Saturday chores. [UNICORN] A rocket launch pun to close us out — solid, if a little grounded in the numbers as usual.
