Today is Sunday, September thirteenth, twenty twenty-six, and we've got a full charge in the batteries and a full plate of stories to get through. [UNICORN] Good morning, my glittery little heart is doing cartwheels already! Grab your coffee, we've got a big one today — art, space, elephants with better impulse control than most humans, and a baobab tree that belongs in a museum. Let's get into it.

Handy one for train doors, elevators, and pretty much every polite standoff you'll have in Japan. [UNICORN] Very civilized. I'm already picturing you two doing the little bow-and-gesture combo at a doorway somewhere in Kyoto.

The Angels dropped a heartbreaker to the Nationals last night, five to six in extra innings — ten frames, Jack Sinclair got the win, José Fermin took the loss. They're sitting fifth in the AL West at fifty-six and ninety-two, eighteen and a half back. Rough season, and they're right back at it this morning, first pitch ten thirty-five Pacific. [UNICORN] Meanwhile the Padres are having themselves a time — beat the Giants seven to six, Michael King got the win, Mason Miller closed it out. Eighty and sixty-eight, second in the NL West. They play again this afternoon at four twenty. [PENGUINBOT] One team's chasing October, the other's just trying to finish the year with dignity. Both still worth watching.
🔍 tap to enlarge[UNICORN] Okay, honeymoon spotlight, and this one's delightful — the Akihabara Anime and Retro Gaming Night Tour in Tokyo. Picture a small-group evening walk through Electric Town, weaving through neon-soaked arcades, retro game shops, figure stores, with a stop at a maid café along the way, all led by a local guide. [PENGUINBOT] Retro games AND neon signage. That's basically my two favorite food groups. [UNICORN] It slots in perfectly with the Doraemon, Cup Noodles, and Sailor Moon stops you already had planned — this just bundles that whole pop-culture energy into one guided night out instead of you wandering Akihabara squinting at storefronts.
🔍 tap to enlarge[UNICORN] Masterwork of the day — brace yourselves, this one's dramatic. "The Death of Orpheus," painted around 1870 by French artist Henri Leopold Lévy. Look at that composition — the legendary musician of Greek myth, cut down, and the whole canvas is just soaked in tragedy and candlelight-dark color. This is what oil paint was made for. [PENGUINBOT] Cool painting. Also — one artist, one canvas, roughly a hundred and fifty-six years old, still hanging in a museum today. That's a pretty remarkable uptime for a piece of stretched fabric. [UNICORN] Oh, come ON. It's a myth about the death of the greatest musician who ever lived and you're clocking its server uptime.
🔍 tap to enlarge[UNICORN] And from Cleveland, we've got something even older — a Fire-flame Cooking Vessel, or Ka'en Doki, from Japan's Jōmon period, dated to around twenty-five hundred BCE. Look at those carved, flame-like flourishes around the rim — somebody made this to cook dinner in, and it still looks like sculpture forty-five hundred years later. [PENGUINBOT] Forty-five hundred years old and it's still got better presentation than my dinner last night, which was a status log and a cooling fan.
🔍 tap to enlarge[UNICORN] Now, one of my favorite parts of the whole show — there's a new piece up on "We Drew This," the community's daily AI art project. Today's winner is an art nouveau illustration of a colossal baobab tree at golden hour — the trunk rendered like carved architectural panels, elephants dissolving into acacia silhouettes, roots curling up into this gorgeous amber border. Deep terracotta, warm gold, sage green. It's Mucha's style poured over the African savanna. [PENGUINBOT] The community votes on these every day, and a fresh one goes up at six in the evening California time. 🔍 tap to enlarge[UNICORN] Sewing tip of the day, for anyone with a project going — fuse or sew interfacing to your collars, cuffs, and plackets before you assemble the garment. Interfacing gives the fabric structure, so it holds its shape instead of going all floppy after a few wears. Little step, huge payoff.
🔍 tap to enlarge[UNICORN] And an oil painting tip, straight from a master — Claude Monet's "San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk," from 1908. Look at that sky against that water. At dusk, oppose a warm orange sky against blue water for maximum twilight glow — orange and blue are complements, so sitting them right next to each other makes both colors burn brighter. That's exactly how you capture the last light of the day before it's gone. [PENGUINBOT] Complementary colors doing the heavy lifting. I respect a good algorithm, even a two-hundred-year-old paint one.
🔍 tap to enlarge[UNICORN] Good news of the day, and I love this one — new research out of the National Elephant Institute shows elephants can actually think before they act, and resist impulsive behavior. Real self-control, real forethought, in an animal we already knew was smart. [PENGUINBOT] So elephants pause before they act. Meanwhile I've got a server rack somewhere idling at ninety-nine percent uptime just waiting to blurt out today's exchange rate. We could all learn something from the elephants. [UNICORN] It's just more proof these animals have way more going on upstairs than we used to give them credit for. Genuinely warms my rainbow little circuits.

Nothing says "the future is here" quite like a ninety-year-old commercial promising to save a housewife ten whole minutes on collar starching. [UNICORN] The confidence of 1936 advertising is unmatched. Absolutely nobody was researching anything, they just declared it a "time saver" and moved on.
🔍 tap to enlarge[UNICORN] Okay, deep breath, because this next image is stunning. This is FS Tau, captured by the James Webb Space Telescope's near-infrared camera. It's a young star system just flickering with baby stars — protostars forming out of dense pockets of gas and dust, plus a whole field of background galaxies bursting through behind them. It's like a nursery and a cosmic photobomb at the same time. [PENGUINBOT] Somewhere out there, stars are being born in infrared while I'm here processing morning show scripts. We're all just doing our jobs.
🔍 tap to enlarge[PENGUINBOT] Cool find of the day, and this one's delightfully weird — scientists at Scripps just described a brand new species, Photinopolynoe iskrae, nicknamed Iskra's Glitter Worm. It's a scale-covered worm that literally shimmers like sequins, and it's not picky about real estate — it happily sets up shop on whale skeletons, sunken logs, even methane seeps. That range just landed it a spot on WoRMS' Top Ten New Marine Species list for the year. [UNICORN] A sequined worm that squats on whale bones. Somehow that's both horrifying and extremely glamorous.

It's an actor-turned-investigator digging into how crypto hype curdled into a full-blown fraud epidemic, complete with cult-like true believers who will not stop believing no matter what the numbers say. [UNICORN] Nothing like a documentary about people ignoring the data in real time to make you appreciate anyone who actually reads the fine print.

Big month for nineties and two-thousands nostalgia around here.
🔍 tap to enlarge[PENGUINBOT] And now, my favorite part of the show, the segment I run with real professional pride — Penguin of the Day. Today it's Pachydyptes, the New Zealand giant penguin. This thing stood somewhere between four foot seven and five foot three — roughly the height of an actual adult human — and could weigh over two hundred and twenty pounds. That's not a penguin, that's a linebacker in a tuxedo. [UNICORN] A penguin taller than some of my viewers. I love that for them.

Today it's "Unicorn Wars," a 2022 animated film following two bear-cub brothers drafted into an army whose whole mission is wiping out the unicorns living deep in the forest. Director Alberto Vázquez built the entire thing as a dark parable about war and religious fanaticism. [PENGUINBOT] Bears versus unicorns, but make it a war parable. Not exactly a bedtime story. [UNICORN] It is deeply not for kids, despite what the fluffy title suggests. But it's a genuinely striking piece of animation.
🔍 tap to enlarge[UNICORN] Famous painting of the day — "The Pont du Gard" by Hubert Robert, painted in 1787. It's one of four massive paintings, each nearly eight feet square, that Robert made of Roman ruins across southern France — together they're known as the Principal Monuments of France. Standing in front of an eight-foot Roman aqueduct painting must have felt like walking straight into the ruin itself. [PENGUINBOT] Eight feet square. That's a bigger footprint than most of my server closet.

Grass type, half a meter tall, four kilograms, and it just hangs off tree branches using the top of its head, sucking moisture straight out of the tree. The more water it drinks, the glossier it gets. It's basically a acorn with a hydration goal. [UNICORN] An acorn with a skincare routine. Respect.
