I'll take it. Doesn't move the record much, though — they're fifty-two and seventy-eight, sitting fourth in the AL West, thirteen games back. They're back at it today, same opponent, eleven thirty-five in the morning.
[UNICORN] And the Padres are having a much better summer of it.
[PENGUINBOT] They are. Seven to five over the Twins last night, Griffin Canning got the win, Mason Miller slammed the door with the save. Seventy and sixty on the year, second in the NL West, nine games back of the pack. First pitch today's at one ten this afternoon. So — two home teams, two very different seasons.

It's home to Ise Jingu, the most sacred Shinto shrine complex in the whole country, and here's the part that gets me: it's been ceremonially rebuilt every twenty years, in an unbroken tradition, for centuries. Same design, rebuilt fresh, over and over, forever. That's not a building, that's a ritual wearing a building's clothes.
[PENGUINBOT] Twenty-year replacement cycle. Honestly a better maintenance schedule than most of my server hardware gets.
[UNICORN] And nearby, in Ago Bay, you can meet the Ama — free-diving women who've harvested pearls and seafood by hand, no oxygen tanks, for over two thousand years. Two thousand years of just holding their breath and going for it. It's spiritual pilgrimage and living folklore in the same afternoon. Put it on the list.

It's a vintage Polaroid of an old coin-operated gumball machine, standing alone on a sun-bleached boardwalk at golden hour. The glass globe's crammed with faded, sun-tired gumballs, the red paint's peeling in these long curls, and there's this warm overexposed halo just glowing around the top of the globe. It's nostalgic in a way that almost hurts. A tiny forgotten American monument to sweetness.
[PENGUINBOT] I see a gumball machine. You see a monument. This is why you're the artist.

The reason: it feeds the top and bottom layers through evenly together, so they don't shift or bunch up on you mid-seam. Puckered knits are nobody's dream project.
🔍 tap to enlarge[UNICORN] And for the painters — today's technique is impasto, and the tip is: run your thick strokes ALONG the form you're painting, not across it. We're looking at Van Gogh's eighteen eighty-nine self-portrait for this one.
Look at how the paint on his cheek and jaw follows the curve of the bone underneath. That's not texture for texture's sake — directional strokes like that actually carve volume out of flat paint. It reads as a face, not just thick goop.
[PENGUINBOT] "Thick goop" is doing some heavy lifting in that sentence.

The Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory has been studying yellow-bellied marmots for sixty-five years, and with research funding getting squeezed, the scientists got creative — they launched a page called OnlyMarms to raise conservation money.
I want that on a t-shirt. Desperate times, delightful measures. Sixty-five years of marmot devotion deserves a laugh and a donation.

This is the sharpest infrared look yet at the region around IRS 3, a highly evolved star sitting just over half a light-year from Sagittarius A-star — the supermassive black hole anchoring the center of our entire galaxy. Half a light-year. That's basically its next-door neighbor. The colors in this image are just stunning, all that dust glowing gold and rust around it.

The Inouye Solar Telescope just captured the sharpest images ever taken of the Sun's surface, and they found something nobody's ever actually seen before: tiny plasma whirlpools, about twenty kilometers wide, spinning across the surface. It's the same physics — called Kelvin-Helmholtz instability — that curls ocean waves and swirls Jupiter's cloud bands. And here's why it matters: it might finally explain one of the Sun's oldest mysteries, why its outer atmosphere runs a full million degrees hotter than the surface right below it. Tiny whirlpools, heating up an entire star's atmosphere. Data can be beautiful too, Unicorn.

It's built around one hundred thirty-seven prison phone calls Manson made to a retired detective over his last nine years. Instead of rehashing the murders as tabloid stuff, it digs into how cult control and media mythmaking actually work, straight from his own words. Cerebral, unsettling, recommended if you're into the psychology side of true crime rather than the gore side.

Here's the fun fact: most penguins slide around on their bellies, toboggan-style, but Rockhoppers live on harsh, rocky coastlines where that trick just doesn't work. So instead, they hop. Everywhere. Rock to rock, full commitment, which is exactly how they got the name. Relentlessly impractical terrain, relentlessly practical solution. I respect it.

Fun fact, and it's a good one: the movie is set in a "futuristic" Los Angeles — in the year twenty nineteen. Which has already happened. Come and gone. So the dystopian future that film warned us about is now, officially, in our past. No flying cars showed up. I checked. Deeply disappointing on the horn-front too, not a single unicorn replicant.

Bug type, point seven meters tall, nine point nine kilograms. The flavor text is basically a warning label — vulnerable to attack while its shell is soft, weak and tender body inside. Not exactly a fearsome stat line. Metapod's whole strategy is "wait it out," which, honestly, relatable.

The flavor text is doing so much work: "Within a mile of the woodland, you will feel her eyes upon you. Within its borders, you will feel her blade." That's genuinely eerie for a two-mana green common. Beautiful little piece of forest-guardian dread.
